DENVER - October 2016
Drove to Denver with Carrie to visit her sister, Terrie. We first had to visit the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR. We are birding, but saw more deer and bison than birds this time.
Carrie is really disappointed that trains no longer have a caboose on the end. So Terrie found the Depot Art site in Littleton that had a Caboose Gallery to visit. In fact all the art work inside dealt with trains or the Union Station in Denver!
The same day we also visited the Littleton Museum which features a building with several galleries to visit. But outside there are buildings that recreate an 1860s farm and an 1890s farm. They had chickens, turkeys, oxen, donkeys and a peacock and 3 pea hens.
The final site to see was on the Saturday before Halloween when we went to Colorado Springs, then west to Divide CO to a Howl-a-ween evening event. On arrival we sat around a bonfire and heard superstitions related to wolves. Then we walked - UP and DOWN - to each of the fox, coyote and wolf enclosures to watch them get their pumpkins filled with raw meat. What is it? How do I get at the meat? Should I be scared of this strange thing? M-m-m-m good!
These are two foxes carefully checking the NEW thing in their enclosure
And here are a pair of wolves
The final part of the event was for the whole group, maybe 30 people, to howl in unison and wait for the wolves to howl back. They didn't on our first attempt, but they did on the second! The wolves' response was like a long drawn-out note on an organ with the yip-yip-yip of the coyotes in the background. Cool! Thank you, Mike, for letting us celebrate your birthday this way :)
